Arsenal are ready to start their transfer market pursue with a £30m bid for Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi this week, according to The Daily Mail.
Arsenal are also interested in West Brom’s Jonny Evans, but only if a move for Mustafi, who is rated at £40m, does not finalise in this coming week.
Arsene Wenger does not have a single fully-fit first-team centre-back at his disposal for Sunday’s clash against Liverpool after Gabriel suffered an ankle injury in the friendly victory over Manchester City last Sunday. Gabriel suffered an injury that sets him out for the next two months, with Per Mertesacker out for a few months on injury too and Laurent Koscielny is rested after his time with France at the Euro’s.
Laurent Koscielny reported back for pre-season training on Monday and could now be rushed back for the visit of Jurgen Klopp’s men despite his lack of fitness.
It has been reported that Wenger had earmarked Koscielny for a place on the bench against Liverpool on Sunday but he could now be thrust into the starting XI to ease Arsenal’s defensive problems. Left-back Nacho Monreal could also be used as a makeshift central defender this weekend.
The only centre-backs Arsene Wenger has to think about ahead of the clash against Liverpool are Calum Chambers and new signing Rob Holding.
In recent reports the signature of Mustafi could be close for Arsenal as Valencia now turn to Eliaquim Mangala as a replacement for the German defender.
