Eric Bailly has revealed his biggest ambition under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United – to win the Champions League.
The Ivorian, who arrived at Old Trafford back in June as Mourinho’s first signing, has enjoyed a sensational start to life in Manchester.
His powerful, ruthless style at the back merits a comparison with former captain Nemanja Vidic, according to teammate Chris Smalling.
In an interview with ManUtd.com, Bailly expressed his desire to win the Champions League with United one day.
“Definitely to win the Champions League with United,” he said.
“I have never played in goal! I was a defensive midfielder when I was young at Espanyol, but I’m a central defender – always.”
Whether he’s playing in a Champions League final against Barcelona or a League Cup tie against Brentford, Bailly conducts himself in exactly the same way. And that, above anything, is why the Ivorian is quickly becoming a fans’ favourite.
Every week, regardless of circumstances, the Ivorian is there, turning strikers into powder with his bombastic, physically intimidating style. The guy just loves to defend. Specifically, he loves the brutish, often gruesome side of defending – usually characterised by placing your head in places most people wouldn’t place their foot, or even glance at without flinching.
United fans will hope that Bailly, at some point in the future, manages to fulfil his ambition. It should be noted, however, that Mourinho’s side needs to actually qualify for the tournament first.
