Japan’s Hozumi Hasegawa caused an upset when he stopped Hugo Ruiz in the ninth round to win the WBC super-bantamweight belt in Osaka, Japan last week.
Ruiz (36-4; 32) quit on his stool after the ninth round, complaining about problems with his breathing.
The southpaw Hasegawa, 36 -5, has now won three WBC belts, having previously held the bantamweight and featherweight belts.
Yamanaka retains WBC bantamweight belt
Japanese southpaw Shinsuke Yamanaka (26-0-2; 18) retained his WBC bantamweight belt, but had to come back from a knockdown before scoring a seventh round technical knockout over Anselmo Moreno (36-5-1; 12) from Panama. The time was 1:09.
