The Hurricanes won the 2016 Vodacom Super Rugby title, beating the Emirates Lions 20-3 in the final in Wellington on Saturday.

The Canes became the fifth and last New Zealand Super Rugby franchise to win the title, as they used their exceptional linespeed and defence to outwit a Lions side who tried hard, but eventually fell short.

Trailing 10-3 at the break, the Lions just couldn’t break the Canes’ defence, which didn’t let through a try in the entire playoff series and went down fighting themselves as much as the opposition.

SCORERS

Hurricanes – tries: Cory Jane, Beauden Barrett. Conversions: Barrett (2). Penalties: Barrett (2).

Emirates Lions – penalty: Elton Jantjies
