Possible Arsenal target Julian Draxler has ruled out a January exit from his current club Wolfsburg. The German international publicly stated his desire to leave Wolfsburg in the summer, and we were one of the clubs to be heavily linked with him. His plans were thwarted when his parent club immediately put their foot down by claiming that he is not for sale and won’t be leaving the club in the summer.
In reality, we have been continuously linked with him since his Schalke days and, in all probability, we will continue to be linked with him in future.
However, if his recent comments are an indication, we won’t be making a move for him at least in the January transfer window.
“I did not get the chance to switch clubs because Wolfsburg did not allow me to leave,” Draxler told German publication, Kicker as translated by goal.com
“There was a lot of speculation during the summer and some things were true, while others were false. There will likely be more speculation in January, but I will not initiate anything.
“I am only human and what has happened has not left me unaffected. Football is business, though, and you have to focus on the task at hand. It is not always easy, but I know what’s expected from me. I will work hard to do just that.
“We had some differences of opinion, but we have set those apart. There is no issue any more. Of course, it is not easy to forget what happened in the summer, but that is now in the past.”
Now, I don’t have any inside information on our interest in the player during the summer transfer window, but I think it was just media-sprouted bullshit.
There is no doubt that he is a talented player, but I don’t expect us to renew out interest in him in near future as we are currently loaded with attacking options.
His current contract runs until 2020, and he reportedly has a £62 million release clause in his contract. And if there’s one football manager who is not going to spend that kind of amount on a player he can do without that manager is our very own Arsene Wenger.
However, Wolfsburg are currently struggling near the relegation zone in Bundesliga and I don’t expect Draxler to remain with his current club beyond next summer. I can envisage him moving to a club like Juventus or Paris Saint-Germain for a big-money move.
