Two giants of Italian football will lock horns on Sunday February 5, with Inter Milan – with six wins in a row, facing the unenviable task of trying to end Juventus’ perfect streak of eleven victories in as many matches on home turf.
The Old Lady, reigning champions of Serie A of course, are once again leading the way from Roma and Napoli, and despite suffering injuries to key players their almost relentless dominance in the Italian game looks likely to continue for a while yet.
But to write off a rejuvenated Inter Milan, who look so much more confident after an awful end to the 2015/16 campaign, would be foolhardy. Any team that wins six games in a row is likely to be full of confidence, and knowing that they beat Juventus earlier in the season – 2-1 back in September – will fill them with belief that they can get a positive result.
So who will get the best of this Juventus vs Inter Milan match?
Juventus vs Inter Match Preview
The winter break in Serie A is known for halting the momentum of teams on a good run and changing the fortunes of those on a downturn, but for Juventus and Inter the good times have simply kept on rolling.
Juve, who had won six out of seven games prior to Christmas, have since followed up with a pair of comfortable triumphs on home soil – 3-0 and 2-0 over Bologna and Lazio respectively, in-between which was sandwiched a disappointing 1-2 defeat at Fiorentina. There are some caveats to that loss; they were without some key defenders and Fiorentina, for all their faults, are on their day a more than capable outfit. The Old Lady’s away record (W5 D0 L4) belies their excellence at home (W11 D0 L0).
So what chance can we offer Inter Milan? If this game was played a couple of months ago we would have said none; between October 2 and December 2, their formline read W3 D1 L5. But something has clicked since then – the appointment of Stefano Pioli as manager has certainly helped, and six wins on the spin confirms that the blue half of Milan is in good heart at the moment.
As long as they don’t read the history books, they will have a chance. In 25 visits to the Juventus Stadium (or the Stadio delle Alpi, Juve’s former home), Inter have won just five times – and tasted defeat on 15 occasions. They will be hoping that history doesn’t repeat itself here.
Juventus vs Inter Prediction
When making a prediction about any game of football, we can only work with the facts in hand. Juventus have won all eleven of their home matches so far this season with a goal difference of +23, which confirms their dominance, and they boast a very handy head-to-head record with Internazionale.
Inter’s six-game winning streak is impressive but context is required: five of those have come against teams from the bottom half of Serie A. The more telling conclusion is that, quite simply, the fixture list has been rather kind to them!
Until now that is….a home win is likely here for Juventus but the Italian Serie A betting odds though gives Inter a slight chance.
Juventus vs Inter Possible Line-Ups
Juventus will once again be without Mehdi Benatia, who is away on African Cup of Nations duty with Morocco, while Claudio Marchisio and Mario Lemina are struggling with injury.
We suspect the Old Lady will line-up in the same way they did in the 2-0 win over Lazio:
Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Bonucci, Chiellini, Asamoah; Khedira, Pjanic, Cuadrado; Mandzukic, Dybala, Higuain.
Inter should be at full strength with Cristian Ansaldi back from suspension, and so they will be hoping to keep changes to their winning side to a minimum:
Handanovic; D’Ambrosio, Ansaldi, Murillo, Miranda; Kondogbia, Brozovic, Candreva, Perisic, Banega; Icardi.
