Reigning Premier League champions Leicester City and FA Cup winners Manchester United meet at Wembley on Sunday for the FA Community Shield, and we believe that Leicester will emerge victors after penalties.
Foxes’ manager Claudio Ranieri has already made his stance on the fixture known, with a full strength side expected to be named and the team taking the fixture seriously. Leicester have managed to retain the majority of their squad this summer, losing only N’Golo Kante to Chelsea, and are hoping to replicate their performances in the upcoming campaign. Leicester earned some impressive results against the traditional heavyweights last season, and while they were defeated twice during the pre-season, the club put up a defiant display against Spanish champions Barcelona, strongly suggesting that their past success may not have been a fluke.
The Red Devils had mixed fortunes during their preparation matches, easily overwhelming Galatasaray in a 5-2 victory, but being swept aside by Borussia Dortmund. Despite a sizeable 25-man squad named for the Community Shield, some of the players are still returning to fitness after international duty, and the cancelled match against Manchester City has limited their opportunities to work together. Although United have brought in some superstar signings, the team are still adjusting to a change in tactics under Jose Mourinho, and could struggle against a Leicester side they were unable to defeat last season.
The past two meetings between these teams both ended in 1-1 draws, and we predict another stalemate after 90 minutes will happen, with Leicester lifting the Community Shield after penalties.
