The Daily Star are claiming Arsenal may make a move for Chris Smalling in this month’s transfer window.
Smalling’s future at Old Trafford is in doubt following series of unconvincing performances this season. Jose Mourinho is keen on signing a centre defender and he is expected to secure the services of Victor Lindelof this month.
And according to reports, Smalling will be the fall guy if Lindelof completes a move to Old Trafford.
According to the publication, Arsenal may swoop for Smalling if Lindelof joins Man Utd.
Wenger is believed to be a big admirer of the defender and tried to sign him from Fulham before he joined United in 2010.
With the future of Mathieu Debuchy, Carl Jenkinson and also the unconvincing performances of Gabriel Paulista, Wenger could be open to the idea of signing another defender – maybe a centre back who can cover at right back. Smalling appears to be a decent option to consider, having played both as a centre back and full back for United in the past.
But I won’t welcome the move because of the player’s quality. Smalling has failed to improve over the years and has had more poor performances like he had against Boro on Monday than good ones. There is nothing that shows he will be an upgrade to any of our current defenders so I do not see the need of signing him even if we become light at the back.
Also the Mourinho-Wenger rivalry will also make it difficult for us to complete any deal, so I’m not expecting the move to happen.
