New York City F.C. vs. Colorado Rapids Match Recap

Two of the top teams in the MLS faced off on Saturday afternoon. New York City F.C. came into the match in first place in the Eastern Conference, with the Colorado Rapids in second place in the Western Conference.

Frank Lampard netted the first goal in the 28th minute. He directed a Tommy McNamara headed pass into the back of the net for his first of the match.

In the 37th minute the Rapids would be reduced to 10 men. Michael Azira received his second yellow card in less than 20 minutes and was sent off.

NYCFC would pick up an important second goal just before the end of the first half. Tony Taylor was the goal scorer, as he picks up his second goal of the season.

The next goal would come at the three quarter hour mark of the match. Steven Mondoza took advantage of some poor defending to fire home the third goal of the match.

Lampard would then put home two goals in the span of three minutes. His first goal was a wonderful curler that was assisted by Jack Harrison. The second goal was scored from the spot after Harrison was taken down in the box. His conversion from the spot allowed him to record NYCFC’s first hat-trick in club history.

The Englishman has now scored more goals than anyone else in the league since June 18th. He’s scored six goals in his last five MLS appearances.

Shkelzen Gashi would add a late goal for the Rapids to end the shutout bid. His free kick took a bounce right in front of the net that beat goalkeeper Josh Saunders.

Up next for the Rapids will be home match against the Vancouver Whitecaps next Saturday. NYCFC will travel to San Jose this week for a Friday night match up.
