 NWSL Weekend Recap

The NWSL kicked off again this weekend after a break during the Olympic Games. This weekend featured the top club in the league earn yet another victory and the Chicago Red Stars move up into third place in the table.

Orlando Pride (1) vs. Washington Spirit (2)

The Washington Spirit earned their 11th win of the season with a victory on the road. Cheyna Williams opened the scoring in the first half with a nice finish into the roof of the net. Christine Naim slotted home the away sides second goal of the match in the 57th minute. The Pride scored a goal in the 71st minute to make things interesting, as Sarah Hagen finished off a cross from Cami Levin. In the end the Spirit preserved their lead and took all three points back home.

Seattle Reign (3) vs. Portland Thorns (1)

A big win for the Seattle Reign on Saturday sees them move into fifth place in the table. The home side struck first in the 27th minute when Manon Melis finished off a nice through ball from Nahomi Kawasumi. Melis scored her second of the match in the early part of the second half to give the Reign a 2-0 advantage. Allie Long pulled a goal back for the Thorns in stoppage time as she directed a Tobin Heath free kick into the net. However, a Megan Rapinoe goal less than two minutes later canceled out any hope for the Thorns to salvage a point.

Western New York Flash (2) vs. Houston Dash (2)

It was a stalemate at Sahlen’s Stadium on Saturday afternoon as the two sides finished level. Denise O’Sullivan scored the opening goal of the match in the 28th minute to give the Dash an early lead. Just eight minutes later Lianne Sanderson finished a Lynn Williams pass to tie the match back up. The second half offered a similar scoring situation as the Dash took the lead first with a fantastic goal from Kealia Ohai. This time it only took the Flash five minutes to pull level as Makenzy Doniak scored the equalizer.

Sky Blue FC (1) vs. Chicago Red Stars (3)

The Red Stars moved into a third place in the league with a win on the road. They now sit only seven points out of first place and one point out of second. Stephanie McCaffrey put the Red Stars on the board first with an attempted cross that ended up going off the post and into the net. In the second half the away side scored two goals late to put the win in the bag. Christine Press and Sofia Huerta were the goal scorers. Samantha Kerr scored a late consolation goal for the home side, but it was little to late as Sky Blue fall back into sixth place in the table.

F.C. Kansas City (0)  vs. Boston Breakers (2)

It was a big win for the Boston Breakers on Sunday afternoon. The club has been struggling to find wins this season and recorded just their third win with this result. Katie Schoepfer scored the first goal of the match with a nice strike from distance. Kristie Mewis scored the insurance goal in the 81st minute, as she finished off her own rebound after hitting the crossbar with a powerful shot.
