Tony Gale says Philippe Coutinho needs to start Liverpool’s clash against Manchester United in the Premier League on Monday night.
The Brazil international is set to return from international duty on Thursday after Coutinho helped his national team record back-to-back victories in their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Coutinho and Liverpool team-mate Roberto Firmino got on the score sheet in Brazil’s 5-0 win against Bolivia before Tete’s side eased to a 2-0 victory over Venezuela on Wednesday night.
The Liverpool midfielder has been in excellent so far this season after a return of three goals and two assists in seven Premier League games in the 2016-17 campaign.
Former West Ham United defender Gale explained why Jurgen Klopp must start Coutinho against United at Anfield irrespective of any fatigue after the international break.
“If he’s fit, he has to play because he’s one of their best players and will be one of the key players that can make something happen [against United],” Gale told Sky Sports News HQ.
“I think what will be key to this game is the way that Liverpool will press into United – and [because] United aren’t good enough to play out of the back, they’ll invite trouble.”
Liverpool are in fourth place in the Premier League table and two points behind leaders Manchester City.
