Arsenal suffered two consecutive defeats at the hands of Everton and Manchester City, but Germany international Mesut Ozil has received backlash for his role at Arsenal.
Former Arsenal star Martin Keown has joined the train of critiques, urging Ozil to step up his defensive work rate.
The former Gunners defender has called on manager Arsene Wenger to give the German playmaker more of a defined role for big games when the team do not have as much of the ball.
Ozil has been enjoying his most prolific form for Arsenal this term but his recent form has left so much to be desired.
‘Mesut Ozil and Arsene Wenger need to work out his role when the team don’t have possession,’ Keown told the Daily Mail. ‘His work rate at Manchester City was not good enough. It looked like he was walking when Arsenal did not have the ball.
‘Ozil needs to be given more responsibility in winning the ball back when Arsenal do not have the ball against teams who are good in possession like City.
‘This question is rarely asked of Arsenal because they are usually so dominant in possession but it does not look as if Ozil’s role has been clearly defined when they do not have the ball.’
