Women’s Olympic Soccer Day 1 Recap

The 2016 Olympic games started early for the women’s soccer tournament. All 12 teams were in action as the favorites looked to start the tournament off on the right note.

Canada (2) vs. Australia (0)

It was a dream start for the Canadian team as they recorded the fastest goal every scored at the Olympic games. Janine Becker was the goal scorer, as she scored just 20 seconds into the match. The match entered another dimension of difficulty for Canada in the 19th minute when Shelina Zadorksy was sent off. However, they held firm and were able to add a second goal in the 78th minute. Veteran captain Christine Sinclair was the provider of the goal.

Germany (6) vs. Zimbabwe (1)

The Germans turned in a dominant performance in their opening match. They jumped out to a 2-1 at the end of the first half. Receiving goals from Sara Daebritz and Alexandra Popp. Kudakwashe Basopo was the lone scorer for Zimbabwe.

In the second half they turned the game into a rout. Melanie Behringer led the way with a brace and Melanie Leupolz added another to make it 5-1. The final goal of the match was an own goal from Eunice Chibanda in the 90th minute.

Sweden (1) vs. South Africa (0)

South Africa’s upset bid just came up short against Sweden. The lone goal of the match was scored by Swedish defender Nilla Fischer in the 74th minute.

Brazil (3) vs. China (0)

The host nation started things off on the right foot as they defeated China 3-0 in front of the home fans. Monica scored the first goal of the match in 36th minute to give the Brazilians a 1-0 lead at the half. They would add two more goals in the second half courtesy of Andressa Alves and Cristiane.

United States (2) vs. New Zealand (0)

It was a good start for the Americans, as the defending gold medalists opened up with a win against New Zealand. They grabbed an early lead just nine minutes into the match. Carli Lloyd provided the goal with a looping header into the back of the net. Alex Morgan would add the second goal in the 46th minute.

France (4) vs. Columbia (0)

France had a fantastic showing in their opening match, as they earned a clean sheet in a 4-0 win over the Colombians. It only took them 14 minutes to take a 2-0 lead.  A Columbia own goal and a Eugenie Le Sommer header gave them the early advantage.

Camille Abily would further extend the lead to 3-0 with a goal from free kick in the 42nd minute. Amel Majri would add a fourth in the 82nd minute with a fantastic free kick.
